Titles

Titling new music is often painful. Especially as nearly all of the music I write is instrumental. Even if the title perfectly communicates the nucleus of the idea, it always seems to end up sounding arbitrary and disconnected. Isn’t the whole point of writing music without lyrics that you are attempting to evoke something that words can’t express? Maybe I just need to crystallise some more direct, real-world meaning while I’m composing, or try and lead people into the music with a few words. Or perhaps better yet, stop worrying and get on with it. Still, I think Beethoven had the right idea: namecheck the instrumentation, the key signature and whatever number of them you’ve written. Then the only other task is to notate some of the most profound music ever conceived..
